Invention Description/ Abstract:
Mastering speaking skills is critical for English as a Second Language (ESL) learners to successfully navigate academic, career, and digital environments. However, traditional classrooms often lack the opportunities for spontaneous, low-anxiety practice that are necessary to build true communicative competence (Taye & Teshome, 2025). This lack of practical engagement can negatively impact a learner's performance and confidence. In order to help students overcome these emotional barriers and foster practical speaking skills, the idea of "VocaLife" was generated. Grounded in Stephen Krashen’s Affective Filter Hypothesis (Krashen, 1982), this application provides a low-stakes, gamified digital environment specifically designed for stress-free spoken practice. Furthermore, drawing upon Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory (Vygotsky, 1978), "VocaLife" leverages dynamic AI interactions to simulate meaningful, real-world social engagement. This application hopes to transform passive learners into confident communicators, transforming how ESL students acquire and practice conversational English.
Invention Technical Description
VocaLife | AI-Powered Task-Based Language Learning Game
VocaLife is an interactive language-learning gaming application designed to build practical speaking skills through task-based immersion. It replaces traditional rote lessons with a dynamic, voice-driven environment where users navigate everyday scenarios and receive real-time AI feedback on their spoken language.
In the homepage, users are presented with two primary pathways for their language practice; Daily Challenges and Stage Challenges.
The Daily Challenges focus on immediate, highly practical everyday chores. They are designed for quick engagement, helping users build a consistent daily habit of speaking and warming up their vocal confidence.
The Stage Challenges involve leveling up to different stages of difficulty. It follows a structured narrative. The difficulty escalates with each stage, requiring more complex grammar, expanded vocabulary, and longer verbal negotiations to successfully complete the scenarios.
In the history icon, this page serves as a comprehensive log of the user's learning journey. It acts as a personal database where users can review past performances, revisit AI corrections, and track their language development across all completed Daily and Stage Challenges.
Gameplay experience:
1. Pick challenge
The player opens the app and chooses either the “Challenges or Daily Challenges”.
2. Start Talking
Once they choose either one, the player is then dropped into the scene. Afterwards, the player holds the microphone button and speaks their opening line to start the interaction.
3. Keep the Conversation Going
The character listens and replies. If the player makes a grammar mistake, the character naturally repeats the sentence back correctly as part of their response so the flow isn't broken.
4. Get Help if Stuck
If the player freezes or forgets a word, they don't fail the level. After a moment of silence, the game pops up a text hint on the screen to guide them toward the right thing to say. The user is given the chance to repeat themselves. In cases they have a grammatical mistake, there will be a pop-up showing the comparison and explaining what the player said and the correct form. The user would then press on the green tick button once understood.
5. Finish and Review
The back-and-forth continues until the player completes the task. At the end, a quick summary screen pops up showing that the player has successfully completed the challenge.
