Invention Description/ Abstract:
AI Guardian is an intelligent safety monitoring system based on Edge Artificial Intelligence (Edge AI) and Computer Vision, developed to detect emergency situations such as falls, fainting, or collapse in real time. The system is designed for elderly individuals and other at-risk persons living alone. AI Guardian operates automatically 24 hours a day without requiring continuous human monitoring.
All image analysis is performed locally on a Raspberry Pi using an Edge AI approach. When the system detects an emergency condition that persists beyond a 10-second verification period, AI Guardian activates a local alarm and sends a notification with an image of the incident to a family member or caregiver via Telegram. This approach enables faster response, reduces reliance on cloud servers, and enhances user privacy.
AI Guardian has currently reached Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7 and has undergone testing in an operational environment that simulates real-world situations. With a development cost of approximately RM300 per unit and a selling price of RM600, the innovation offers a 50% profit margin without any monthly subscription fees. AI Guardian has the potential to be deployed in private residences, elderly care centres, hospitals with private rooms, and rehabilitation centres, while supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure).
Invention Technical Description
AI Guardian is an intelligent safety monitoring system that combines Computer Vision, Edge Artificial Intelligence (Edge AI), Raspberry Pi, Python programming, camera technology, and real-time communication to detect emergency situations such as falls, fainting, collapse, and prolonged inactivity.
The system uses a camera to continuously monitor a designated area. Visual input is processed locally on a Raspberry Pi using a Computer Vision model developed and integrated through Python programming. The system analyses the individual’s position, posture, and movement to identify potential emergency situations.
When a potential fall or collapse is detected, AI Guardian activates a 10-second verification mechanism to reduce false alarms. If the individual recovers or resumes normal movement within this period, the alert is cancelled. If the abnormal condition persists beyond 10 seconds, the event is confirmed as an emergency.
Once an emergency is confirmed, the Python-based system activates a local alarm and captures an image of the incident. A notification containing the incident image is then sent to the designated family member or caregiver through Telegram, enabling faster awareness and response.
AI Guardian uses an Edge AI architecture, where image analysis and emergency detection are performed directly on the Raspberry Pi without continuously sending video footage to cloud servers. Only the image of a confirmed emergency is transmitted for notification. This reduces dependence on cloud services, minimises data usage, and enhances user privacy.
The system operates automatically 24 hours a day without requiring the user to wear any device or depend on continuous human monitoring. Its functions can also be extended to detect other time-based situations, such as prolonged sleeping or remaining in a bathroom beyond a user-defined period.
AI Guardian is suitable for private residences, elderly care centres, hospitals with private rooms, and rehabilitation centres. The system has reached Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7 and has been tested in an operational environment that simulates real-world conditions. With an estimated development cost of RM300 per unit and a selling price of RM600, AI Guardian offers an affordable solution without monthly subscription fees.
