Invention Description/ Abstract:
The Smart Lab Fire Safety and Asset Protection System is a laboratory-focused IoT safety and incident-management solution designed to improve fire-risk monitoring, protect valuable laboratory assets, and support faster and more traceable emergency response. Conventional local fire alarms often provide limited remote monitoring and do not directly connect fire-related incidents with information about laboratory assets, responsible personnel, historical environmental conditions, and response records. This project addresses these limitations by integrating fire monitoring, asset management, and incident coordination into a single platform.
The system uses an ESP32 sensor node equipped with MQ-2 smoke, flame, and DHT22 temperature and humidity sensors, together with local buzzer and LED indicators for immediate alerts. Sensor data is transmitted to a Laravel API backend and stored in a MySQL database. Authorized users can monitor laboratory conditions through a Flutter mobile application, while administrators can manage users, sensor nodes, protected assets, duty rosters, alerts, reports, and audit records through a Laravel web portal. When configured safety thresholds are exceeded, the system generates an alert containing relevant sensor and asset information. It also supports Telegram-based notifications, allowing responsible personnel to acknowledge incidents and record response remarks. Historical sensor readings and generated reports provide additional traceability for subsequent review and analysis.
The main contribution of the project is the integration of environmental monitoring with asset information and structured incident-response management in a low-cost, laboratory-specific prototype. Unlike a standalone fire alarm, the system connects detected risks with the affected location, protected equipment, responsible personnel, notification history, and recorded response actions. For the current FYP1 phase, the deliverable is a verified software prototype using a controlled sensor simulator. The system has successfully passed 159 Laravel tests with 730 assertions and 64 Flutter tests. Physical ESP32 sensor integration, sensor calibration, and real-environment validation are planned for the next development phase. The system is intended as an academic safety-support prototype and is not designed to replace certified fire-detection equipment.
Invention Technical Description
The Smart Lab Fire Safety and Asset Protection System is designed as a layered IoT monitoring and incident-response platform for school laboratories and server rooms. At the device level, the planned hardware node uses an ESP32 microcontroller connected to an MQ-2 smoke sensor, an infrared flame sensor, and a DHT22 temperature and humidity sensor. A buzzer and LED provide immediate local warnings, while sensor readings are transmitted to the backend through Wi-Fi using MQTT or HTTP.
At the application level, the system uses Laravel (PHP) as the API and administration backend, with MySQL providing persistent data storage. The database manages information including users, roles, sensor nodes, sensor readings, asset inventory, duty rosters, alerts, acknowledgements, notification logs, and audit records. A Flutter mobile application allows authorised personnel to monitor laboratory conditions in near real time, receive alerts, respond to incidents, access asset and sensor information, manage duty attendance, and review historical readings and reports. Meanwhile, the Laravel web portal provides administrative functions such as user and role management, sensor-node configuration, asset management, duty-roster management, alert monitoring, reporting, and system-log management.
The alert workflow is based on configurable threshold rules rather than predictive AI. When a monitored value exceeds the configured conditions, the system generates an alert while preserving the relevant sensor and asset information. Telegram notifications can then be sent to configured recipients. Personnel can acknowledge incidents and add response remarks, while the system retains notification and response records to provide traceability for future review.
For the FYP1 phase, a controlled Demo Sensor Simulator is used to generate labelled scenarios, including normal conditions, high temperature, high smoke levels, and flame detection. This allows the complete software workflow to be tested without requiring the physical hardware to be fully deplo
