Invention Description/ Abstract:

This project introduces an innovative Automated Window Blind Control System that integrates Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) technology with light detection sensors and voice recognition to enhance energy efficiency, user comfort, and convenience in both residential and commercial spaces.

The system is designed with a dual-mode control mechanism. In the automatic mode, a light sensor continuously monitors the ambient light intensity. When the light level surpasses or drops below pre-defined thresholds, the PLC automatically adjusts the position of the window blinds to optimize natural lighting, reduce glare, and minimize the use of artificial lighting—thereby contributing to energy savings.

In the manual mode, users can override the automatic settings using voice commands. This is achieved through a voice recognition module that interprets spoken instructions to open, close, or adjust the blinds. This hands-free feature enhances accessibility, especially for individuals with mobility limitations, and provides a smart home experience without the need for physical switches or mobile apps.

The system architecture ensures reliable performance and fast response by utilizing a PLC as the core controller, known for its durability and real-time processing in industrial environments. The modular design also allows for easy customization and scalability based on room size, number of windows, or user preferences.

This dual-mode system bridges the gap between automation and user interaction, offering a practical, intelligent solution for modern building environments. It demonstrates the feasibility and advantage of combining industrial-grade control systems with emerging smart home technologies to improve daily life and promote sustainable living.

Invention Technical Description

The Automated Window Blind Dual-Mode Control System with PLC-Based Light Detection and Voice Recognition is an intelligent control system that automates window blind operation based on real-time ambient lighting conditions and user voice commands. The system integrates both hardware and software components for efficient and flexible blind control in residential or commercial settings.

The core of the system is a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), which serves as the main processing unit. It receives input signals from a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) that continuously detects the intensity of ambient light. When the light level exceeds or falls below the preset thresholds, the PLC activates the linear actuator to adjust the blinds either upward or downward. This process is governed by a programmed logic sequence within the PLC using ladder logic or structured text.

In parallel, the system features a voice recognition module, such as the Ai-Thinker VC02 Offline Voice Recognition Module, interfaced with the KV-N14DT PLC. The module is trained to recognize predefined commands such as "open blinds," "close blinds," and "stop." Upon receiving a valid voice command, the microcontroller on the module sends a digital signal to the PLC, which then executes the corresponding motor control sequence. Proper signal isolation between the module and PLC is achieved through opto-isolators or relays to ensure safe and reliable communication.

The system operates in two selectable modes:

i. Automatic Mode – Based on ambient light intensity, the PLC autonomously adjusts the blinds to regulate natural lighting.
ii. Manual Voice Mode – Users can control the blinds via voice commands, overriding automatic adjustments.

A mode selection switch is implemented to allow users to toggle between automatic and manual voice modes. The entire system is powered by a regulated 12V DC supply, with step-down converters where necessary such as stepping down the 24V from the PLC power supply to 12V for the linear actuat.

The design emphasizes modularity, user-friendliness, and energy efficiency. The use of PLC ensures industrial-grade reliability, while the integration of voice control offers a modern, interactive user experience. The system can be expanded to support multiple blinds and additional features such as mobile app integration or timer-based control in future enhancements.
